The first International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) is scheduled to be held in Beijing from July 16 to 28,2023, with the theme of "Focusing on Basic Science, Leading the Future of Humanity". This is a top academic event in the field of basic science, focusing on academic research and exchanges in the three basic science fields of mathematics, theoretical physics, theoretical computer, and information science. The conference will present a Basic Science Lifetime Achievement Award and a Frontier Science Award.
Following the important speech spirit of President Xi Jinping about strengthening basic scientific research, and building an international platform for basic research cooperation, Mr Shing-Tung Yau, the chairman of the World Chinese Mathematician Alliance, an internationally famous mathematician, proposed an international conference on basic science, to speed up the construction of the world's top scientists communication platform, promote open cooperation in the field of basic science, explore the latest research progress in basic science, make important contributions to the progress of human science and civilization.
On July 16, the International Congress of Basic Science will open at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. At that time, more than 300 overseas top scientists and nearly 1,000 domestic first-class scholars will gather in Huairou Science City to deeply discuss the cutting-edge achievements in the field of basic science and look forward to the future development direction of basic research. World-renowned scientists, including eight Fields Prize winners, four Turing Prize winners, one Nobel Prize winner, and more than 50 academicians from various countries, will attend and deliver high-level academic reports. In addition, more than 500 conference reports, special academic conferences, and satellite conferences will build a bridge for scholars at home and abroad to exchange and share academic achievements. During the conference, students from universities across China majoring in basic science will show their research results through academic posters. Also invited to attend the conference are youth representatives and people from all walks of life who love and support the development of basic science, providing them with valuable opportunities to exchange and talk with the world's top scientists.
Fields Prize winners David Mumford, Maxim Kontsevich, Laurent Lafforgue, Andrei Okounkov, Caucher Birkar, Alessio Figalli, Hugo Duminil-Copin, Turing Prize winners John E. Hopcroft, Yao Qizhi (Andrew Chi-Chih Yao), Adi Shamir, Leslie G. Valiant and Nobel Prize winner David Gross will attend the opening ceremony of the conference. Shing-Tung Yau, the president of the conference and a Fields Prize winner, is full of confidence and expectation for the conference. He says that it is the first time in the history of science to gather so many world-class scholars to come to China to discuss the academy."I look forward to making contributions to the development of basic science in the world through such large-scale academic exchanges. We hope that internationally renowned scholars, especially those with outstanding achievements, will strengthen their understanding of China. At the same time, we hope that young scholars and students will actively communicate with world-class scholars, to set a clear goal.”
The conference is hosted by the Beijing Municipal People's Government, the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, the China Association for Science and Technology, and the World Federation of Chinese Mathematicians. Organized by the Beijing Science and Technology Commission, Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park Management Committee, Beijing Association for Science and Technology, Beijing Huairou District People's Government, Beijing Huairou Science City Management Committee, Beijing Yanqi Lake Applied Mathematics Research Institute, and co-organized by Shing-Tung Yau Mathematical Science Center of Tsinghua University.
