From July 16 to 28,2023, the first International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) was successfully held in Beijing. More than 800 scientists from around the world gathered in Beijing to discuss the cutting-edge achievements in basic science and look forward to the future development direction of basic science research.
More than 200 students from Qiuzhen College of Tsinghua University participated in the conference and provided volunteer services as volunteer volunteers. Through the opening ceremony, the media meeting, the awards ceremony, the welcome dinner to the physical night, mathematics, scientists, face-to-face, and another important link, the students have the opportunity to communicate with important guests through close discussion, assist the conference organizing committee for the attending experts, check-in, translation, guidance, and scheduling provide services. I believe that this conference will leave a deep impression on the students. Let's understand the feelings and gains through the summary of some students.
Tian Baohua:
I learned a lot at this conference, and I realized that I didn't understand a lot. The biggest impact on me should be in the series of reports on the stability of Kerr black holes on July 19. There was only one morning report by Professor Klainerman, who reviewed the progress, difficult points, and feasible directions of the problem. I was surprised to find that the PPT experts who had made breakthrough contributions to various issues appeared on the list of speakers in the afternoon. They exchanged views fully and passionately with Professor Yu Ping and Professor Andersson during the tea break. I quite recognize and yearn for this state. Doing research is not willful or competing with each other, but putting down fame and wealth, to take the initiative to communicate with people for the problems in my heart, and to solve a grand problem together.
Dan Liujin:
In this conference, the students of Qiuzhen College need to connect with experts and do a good job of notification and reception, which allows us to communicate with experts in close range. On the day when the expert with my classmate arrived, I asked the expert if he had time to communicate with us after finishing the formalities. The expert was very friendly and accepted our invitation and communicated with us for more than an hour. In the process, we answered all kinds of learning questions, gave the answers according to our own experience, and gave a lot of guidance and suggestions, which benefited us a lot. Finally, I also took a group photo with us and gave us the manuscript from the communication process. During the conference, we can not only serve experts but also listen to various reports according to our interests. Some popular reports will also be heard together with many academic masters. After that, we will see many experts get together to discuss and exchange academic issues with each other, which makes me deeply feel the strong academic atmosphere.
Tian Zitong:
At this conference, I saw a lot of reference books and the paper's author, a kind of academic star excitement. In particular, I met the author of the paper, whom I had read carefully, and met with him many times, which gave me a deeper understanding of the problems of the article. I hope the college will provide more opportunities for students to engage with and work on cutting-edge issues. It is a pity that with my current depth of learning, I can not ask some level of questions to the experts, so I should work hard in the future.
Wang Jinyi:
Before this conference, I had the honor to meet Laurent Lafforgue in the activities of the USTC, and I learned that he will also go to BIMSA to attend the ICBS conference, I came to Jixian village in advance, during the communication also met and interviewed the famous female mathematician Olivia Caramello, I exchanged a lot of academic knowledge, including topos theory. During the interview, they were very enthusiastic and said that they were very satisfied with the conference, the Chinese academic environment, and airport pick-up services. In addition, they mentioned that Chinese students work hard and are polite to professors and scholars. It is worth mentioning that Professor Lafforgue thinks it is very good that the conference focuses on basic science rather than a certain direction. At the conference, experts and scholars from different fields can tell the relevant knowledge: artificial intelligence, physics night, etc. It is very beneficial to strengthen interdisciplinary communication between different branches and fields, and at the same time, we should be vigilant against excessive specialization of disciplines. In addition, I had meals and talked with professors from different countries, including France, the United States, and Japan, and exchanged views on education and culture, which was very rewarding.
Ma Yixuan:
Before the conference, I served as a volunteer at the Algebra and Arithmetic Geometry Satellite Conference to meet the Fields Prize winner Professor Laurent Lafforgue. In contact with mathematicians, although we failed to raise deep academic questions, we talked about his work in the Huawei Mathematics Center in Paris and his experience in academic conferences there and heard about the French professors' affirmation of Chinese students. To be honest, most of the ICBS reports are very obscure to me. and events such as Math Night, Math and Physics Forum, Basic Science Forum, and Artificial Intelligence Forum have further broadened my horizons and given me the future of basic sciences such as mathematics. In addition, I also accompanied the professors of mathematical logic to the Ming Tombs and the Mutianyu Great Wall, which experienced Chinese history and culture and enhanced exchanges.
Ji Changkun:
This conference has given me a very rich harvest. I have very actively listened to a lot of reports on combinatorial mathematics, graph theory, mathematical logic, etc., which gives me a deeper understanding and more interest in these branches. In addition, my biggest harvest was that I met a professor of mathematical logic at lunch and had some communication. He is a master of logic, giving numerous patient and meticulous entry-level instructions to our poorly established freshmen, accomplished painting, a magnificent painting of the Great Wall next to BIMSA, classical music, especially Beethoven's symphony, and his social media user name is "Beauty and truth", as we mean. He made me realize that there is no imaginary barrier to communicating with the masters, the real masters are happy to communicate with young students; and the knowledge of beauty should not be limited to mathematics, the beauty of nature and art are essential, to be a truly great mathematician should also dabble in other wonderful academic or artistic fields.
In the first ICBS, truth-seeking students not only gained valuable experience through volunteer service but also had the opportunity to communicate face-to-face with experts and scholars, which fully narrowed the distance between them. Students had a deeper understanding of the significance of scientific research and felt the charm of basic science.
We believe that the International Conference of Basic Science has greatly stimulated students' enthusiasm for exploration in the field of basic science! Scientific research is a lifelong career, only continuous learning, and active exploration can achieve outstanding results!
The majority of Qiuzhen students dressed the red color representing the enthusiasm and sunshine-like smile of Qiuzhen. They served the conference, benefited from the conference, grew up at the conference, and looked forward to meeting again at the conference next year!
