Qiuzhen College of Tsinghua University Holds Opening Ceremony for the 2024 Preparatory Class of the Yau Mathematical Sciences Leaders Program

On the afternoon of February 24th, the opening ceremony for the 2024 preparatory class of the "Yau Mathematical Sciences Leaders Program" at Qiuzhen College of Tsinghua University (hereinafter referred to as the "Mathematics Leaders Program") took place in the main building's rear hall. Distinguished attendees of the ceremony included Tsinghua University's President Luming Li, who delivered a speech, and Qiuzhen College's Dean Shing-Tung Yau, who gave the closing speech. Wang Xiaofang, Deputy dean of Qiuzhen College presided over the ceremony.

Luming Li first extended a warm welcome to the new preparatory class students on behalf of the university and expressed gratitude and respect to the teachers and relatives who supported their education. He shared the development history of Tsinghua University and the founding background of Qiuzhen College, along with the profound meaning of Tsinghua University's motto "Self-Discipline and Social Commitment." He hoped that everyone would integrate the spirit of "Self-Discipline and Social Commitment" into their relentless pursuit of innovation, uphold moral integrity, and bear the historic mission of national rejuvenation. He expressed high expectations for the students' university life, encouraging them to establish lofty ambitions, and steadfast academic pursuits, choose challenging topics in the field of mathematics, climb the peaks of science and technology, and strive for breakthrough progress and innovative results. He wished for the students to grow through overcoming difficulties, make progress through diligent persistence, stay calm in the face of new challenges, setbacks, and failures, strengthen their inner selves, learn to reflect, adhere to their principles, and maintain confidence. Finally, Luming Li encouraged and wished the students to grow in Tsinghua and achieve a brilliant life through relentless efforts.

Zhijie Chen, Associate Dean of Qiuzhen College talked about the development of the college and stated that with the completion of the first three years of basic study by the inaugural students of the Mathematics Leaders Program, Qiuzhen College is embarking on a new journey in cultivating mathematical sciences leaders. Furthermore, Vice Dean Zhijie Chen believes that with our efforts, a significant number of academic masters will be cultivated locally in China, positioning Qiuzhen College as a global powerhouse for mathematics talent development. Yong Lin, Admission Dean of Qiuzhen College, introduced the preparatory phase's training, assessment, and management requirements, emphasizing that the preparatory training is an essential part of the admissions process and that only those who pass the preparatory assessment can be admitted to Tsinghua University.

Jinhan Huang, a student representative from the 2023 Mathematics Leaders Program, shared his learning experiences and insights at the college. Qiuzhen Yiyou Scholar representative  Zhifei Zhu shared his experiences and insights from the past two years. Qingli Bai, the father of a student from the 2023 Mathematics Leaders Program, spoke on behalf of the relatives.

In the closing speech, Shing-Tung Yau expressed four hopes for the students. First, he hoped that students would develop an interest in academia, actively explore the mysteries of nature, understand the structure and beauty of the universe, and commit to seeking truth and beauty in their academic pursuits. Second, he encouraged them to set lofty goals, understanding that academic endeavors should aim to benefit the country and the people and reach the highest realm of academic pursuit. Third, he advised them to build a solid academic foundation and cultivate the ability to pursue knowledge while being mindful not to set unrealistic goals prematurely. Fourth, he recommended actively engaging with teachers, Yiyou Scholars, and classmates and fostering a collaborative spirit to continuously accumulate knowledge and enrich their academic foundation.
