On October 21, 2023, the research orientation seminar of Qiuzhen College was held in the Jianhua Building of Tsinghua University. Mr.Shing-Tung Yau, Dean of Qiuzhen College, attended the briefing and delivered a speech. 18 professors attending the seminar are from Tsinghua University Yau Mathematical Sciences Center with six main research directions (algebra, algebraic geometry, number theory, geometric topology, analysis, PDE, dynamic system, mathematics and physics, applied mathematics, probability statistics). Meanwhile, Professor Su Liangjun, from the Department of Economics and Management, Associate Professor Mo Yilin and Feng Jianjiang, and Assistant Professor Qiao Hui, from the Department of Automation also attended the presentation, and explained the frontier content in various directions. Professor Yang Yuhong, Director of the Probabilistic Statistics Research Direction of the Mathematical Science Center, presided over the meeting. Representatives of the six directions of the Mathematical Science Center, Wang Xiaofang, Chen Zhijie, Zhang Yihua, Assosiate Deans of Qiuzhen College, and more than 200 students attended the seminar.

In his speech, Yau said that the goal of the College always focuses on scientific research. We hope that students in the lower grades will do good results in competitions and exams so that they can lay a good foundation and master the tools of basic research. In the future, whether it is basic mathematics applied mathematics, or even interdisciplinary subjects, we should start to research a good basis. Making good knowledge and achieving good results is the only goal that every mathematician should pursue. Learning can not be done, no matter how good the test is meaningless. He hopes that the students will complete world-class research here and that when they leave the college, their doctoral thesis will be world-class.

Yau stressed that there are many kinds of knowledge, including foundation and application, which are very important. However, without a good foundation, it is difficult to make first-class applied research. Among many important applied mathematicians around the world, they are often first-class basic mathematicians. Therefore, the students of Qiuzhen College must learn the required courses of the first three years, learn and learn thoroughly, so that in the process of research, they will not be at a loss because they do not understand the knowledge of some subjects.

Yau said that the mathematics center has many excellent teachers, and students need to understand the cutting-edge content of each direction and the cutting-edge work done by teachers in each direction. At the same time, interest matters. To find a research direction that you are interested in, choose a mentor who can lead your future research. But it is also important to find their way and do really deep and content research, which is very important.

Professor Zhang Yihua made a concluding speech at the lecture. He introduced that if students have passed all the doctoral examinations, they can begin to contact academic tutors for research. Through this seminar, students fully understand the research direction of Qiuzhen College, which helps them to find the direction and mentor they are interested in. The College is committed to providing sufficient resources for students, especially helping them to connect with many top experts in different fields.
