    Summary

In this lecture, I will present several historical interactions between theoretical physics and pure mathematics, starting from ancient times and finishing in the modern era. In this process we will learn how this relation has progressed and how, nowadays a constant feedback between both subjects has arisen from the advent of string theory. This modern point of view has been termed 'physical mathematics' and I will present some notable examples of this development, such as mirror symmetry and quantum geometry.
