On August 14, the "Truth-seeking Lecture" was held in Jinshan Middle School in Shantou City, Guangdong Province. Mr. Shing-Tung Yau, the dean of Qiuzhen College of Tsinghua University, Director of Shing-Tung Yau Mathematical Science Center, and President of Beijing Yanqi Lake Applied Mathematics Research Institute, attended the scene and delivered a speech. Wang Xuezhu, vice mayor of Shantou City, Liu Yongming, deputy secretary general of Shantou Municipal Party Committee, Li Xiang, the director of Shantou Municipal Education Bureau, Wei Chongxing, Party Secretary of Jinshan Middle School, Wu Jinnan, the principal of Jinshan Middle School, Long Fei, vice president of Beijing Yanqi Lake Applied Mathematics Research Institute and consultant of Qiuzhen College, Wang Xiaofang and Lin Yong, vice presidents of Qiuzhen College of Tsinghua University attended the event.

Wang Xuezhu delivered the opening speech. She first extended a warm welcome to the lecture held in Shantou. In her speaking, mathematics is the foundation of basic science, and basic scientific research is the cornerstone of the development of science and technology. The truth-seeking tour provides an opportunity for students to learn and understand wonderful and interesting mathematical stories, so as to sow seeds in the hearts of students and attract more middle school students with mathematical talent and interests to embark on the road of mathematics research. Wang Xuezhu mentioned that Shantou city has always given priority to education in its development, and promoted the whole society to form a good atmosphere of respecting science, innovation and talents. She hoped that Mr.Yau and all the experts and scholars will often come to Shantou to see, feel the good changes in Shantou, and continue to support the development of basic discipline education in Shantou.

Liu Haoxiang, a 2021 student of Qiuzhen College, gave a report on mathematics history entitled "Mapping and its extension". Liu Haoxiang began to speak with the "circle for square", "times" cube "," three equal corner " of two thousand years ago and other ancient problems, shared the mathematicians of all dynasties to solve these problems, for everyone introduced in detail the methods and tools of mapping. Liu Haoxiang finally concluded that it was precisely because of the efforts of these mathematicians that we could have a deeper understanding of geometry and algebra, and have access to more mapping tools. Their contributions promoted the development of mathematics and provided a broader research space for later mathematicians and scientists.

Mr.Yau made a concluding speech for the lecture. He said he was very happy to come to —— Shantou, the city where he was born, to hold a Truth-seeking Tour Lecture. He shared his own growth experience with the students present, talked about his experience of working and exploring in the mathematical world, and encouraged the young students to constantly explore meaningful questions and learn more, ask more and think more."Knowing how to ask questions is a very important step. For a good mathematician, or a great mathematician, you have to know how to create problems, how to take their own route, to create a new direction, and the most important step, to know how to ask questions, I hope our students will slowly learn how to ask questions."
Over the years, Mr.Yau has always been concerned about his hometown, caring and supporting the development of basic science education and scientific research in Shantou. He hopes that the students who are interested in mathematics can have a firm faith, devote themselves to climbing the peak of basic science, and expect to cultivate world-class mathematicians in Shantou.

After the lecture, the students interacted with Mr.Yau on the connection between geometry and algebra, how to experience and explore the beauty of traditional culture and mathematics at the same time. Finally, Mr.Yau presented a souvenir of the academy to the students and took a group photo.

The lecture was firmly supported by Shantou Jinshan Middle School, which attracted more than 280 Shantou students to participate. In the lecture, the participants were including the experts and scholars from Tsinghua University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China University of Science and Technology, Zhejiang university, Southeast University of China, Beijing Yanqi Lake Applied Mathematics Institute, and the media from CCTV, China News Agency, Beijing Television, Shanghai Television, Southern Daily, Yangcheng Evening News, Guangdong Radio and Television, Southern Metropolis Daily, Shantou Media Group and other media, and some representatives of our college’s teachers and students.

It is worth mentioning that after the lecture, the students of the College sang the song "Ode to the Truth" for everyone. The song was written by Mr.Yau to encourage the young students to promote the civilization of the East and carry the glory of its history. We hope that the middle school students present can also be encouraged by listening to the song.
