On December 28, 2023, the Mathematics Student Academic Exchange Program between Qiuzhen College of Tsinghua University and American universities was officially launched in Beijing. The opening ceremony, held at Tsinghua University, was attended by distinguished guests such as Mr. Shing-Tung Yau, foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and dean of Qiuzhen College, Gang Peng, vice president of Tsinghua University, Nicolai Reshetikhin, professor at the Center for Mathematical Sciences of Tsinghua University, and Peijing Song, director of the Office of International Affairs. The ceremony was hosted by Yihua Zhang, Deputy dean of Qiuzhen College.
In his opening speech, Gang Peng extended a warm welcome to the students from the United States. He highlighted that mathematics is a crucial foundation for training scientific talents and conducting academic research and is one of the most internationalized basic disciplines. He elaborated on the original intention and mission of Qiuzhen College and encouraged the new generation of Chinese and American young mathematics students to maintain an open and cooperative attitude, hoping they could further deepen cooperation and achieve fruitful results in scientific research and other areas.
Shing-Tung Yau mentioned in his speech that with strong support from the university and the nation, Qiuzhen College has been established for nearly three years. Under the continuous cultivation of numerous world-class mathematicians, many outstanding students have achieved remarkable results in competitions such as the Putnam Mock Contest and the Yau College Student Mathematics Competition, as well as in scientific research, demonstrating their sharp edge. He expressed that in the new era where international exchange and cooperation are deepening and integrating, Qiuzhen College will surely produce more first-class scholars in the next decade. In his speech, Yau fondly recalled his academic journey in Hong Kong and the United States and encouraged Chinese and American students to study diligently, explore bravely, and contribute to the development of mathematics in the future.
Nicolai Reshetikhin mentioned his experience of joining the Center for Mathematical Sciences and teaching at Qiuzhen College, noting that more and more top students are choosing to join Qiuzhen, showing excellent performance and vitality. Tsinghua University has also gathered a group of internationally renowned mathematics masters, first-class mathematicians, and young academic talents with potential, providing a higher platform for the development of mathematics. He believes that this exchange program will provide American university students with more opportunities to visit Tsinghua, understand Qiuzhen, and promote the sharing of academic achievements between the two sides.
Yihua Zhang provided a systematic introduction to Qiuzhen College, comprehensively showcasing the achievements of the college's construction in the past three years from unique programs, training, and growth. He extended a warm invitation to American students, welcoming them to have more opportunities to interact and cooperate with Qiuzhen students, exchange ideas, and grow together.
Student representatives from four American universities introduced their schools and the direction of mathematics disciplines and expressed high expectations for this academic exchange program. They are also prepared to discuss some research problems with Chinese teachers and students to stimulate inspiration for scientific research innovation.
Qianya Luo and Jinyi Wang, student representatives from Qiuzhen, shared their study and life experiences at the college with the teachers and students present. They expressed gratitude for the talent cultivation provided by the college and their expectations for the exchange program. They hope to exchange ideas and research directions with students from America, understand the mathematics learning model and academic research trends of American universities, and broaden their academic horizons.
This academic exchange program is hosted by Qiuzhen College of Tsinghua University, with students from Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, and the University of California, Berkeley participating. The program covers Beijing and Shanghai. During their stay in Beijing, students from Qiuzhen College will join American students in various academic discussion groups and public problem seminars to share research results. Subsequently, the program participants will travel to Shanghai to attend the annual meeting of the International Consortium of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM 2023) and listen to multiple academic lectures. In the future, students from Qiuzhen College will also have the opportunity to visit the United States for short-term study visits or social practice, jointly promoting the continuous deepening of exchanges between the two sides.
