On the afternoon of September 14, 2025, Qiuzhen College of Tsinghua University held the Opening Ceremony for the Class of 2025 and the Chair Professorship Appointment Ceremony at the Tsinghua University Auditorium. The ceremony was addressed by Wu Huaqiang, Vice President of Tsinghua University; Shing-Tung Yau, Dean of Qiuzhen College; and Yi Luo, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering of Tsinghua University. Four internationally renowned mathematicians were officially appointed as Qiuzhen Chair Professors, including: Caucher Birkar, Fields Medalist and Member of the European Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society (UK); Nicolai Reshetikhin, Fellow of the American Mathematical Society; Kenji Fukaya, Member of the Japan Academy; and Vladimir Markovic, Fellow of the Royal Society (UK).

Opening Ceremony Highlights
In 2025, Qiuzhen College welcomed 196 new students, including 136 undergraduates and 60 graduate students, among whom 16 are the inaugural class of master’s students of the “Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence” Program. Additionally, 38 students from the first cohort of the Mathematical Sciences Leaders Program advanced to doctoral studies. The total enrollment at the Qiuzhen College now reaches 728, forming an integrated and interdisciplinary system for cultivating high-level talent across undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs.
Since its inception, Qiuzhen College has been guided by the educational principle of “nurturing top talent with top masters”. The College is committed to recruiting world-leading scholars to its full-time faculty. The Qiuzhen Chair Professors Program was formally launched during the ceremony with the appointment of four internationally renowned mathematicians, including Caucher Birkar, Nicolai Reshetikhin, Kenji Fukaya, and Vladimir Markovic.
In his concluding remarks, Professor Yau first expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the four newly appointed Qiuzhen Chair Professors for their full-time commitment. He highlighted that their participation would significantly advance the College’s mission of talent cultivation. Addressing the incoming students, He emphasized that profound scholarship requires foresight, a holistic perspective, diligence and perseverance, as major breakthroughs often follow years of dedicated accumulation. He further stressed the importance of mastering solid foundational tools and enhancing interdisciplinary competence, pointing out that many groundbreaking discoveries often originate from the convergence of diverse fields.

The ceremony also featured a presentation of scholarships to incoming students in recognition of their outstanding academic records, aiming to motivate them to pursue excellence.
The development of Qiuzhen College is inseparable from the dedication and care of its class advisors. At the ceremony, Professor Yau presented letters of appointment to the five advisors of the Class of 2025.
