Abstract:

The theory of characteristic classes of the projective unitary group PU(n) is fundamental yet very mysterious as of today. We will review recent progresses on the study on this topic, and consider the Chern classes γi of the conjugation representation of the projective unitary group PU(p^l), where p is an odd prime. We show that the restriction of γi on a maximal elementary abelian p subgroup are expressed as Dickson invariants, a collection of purely algebraically defined elements in the polynomial ring Fp[x1, · · · , xn]. Furthermore, we present some relations in the cohomology algebra H∗(BPU(p^2); Fp) involving the classes γi.

YMSC Topology Seminar | Invariants of real vector bundles

Abstract:I will describe a complete set of numerical invariants for deciding whether a real vector bundle is stably trivial. These invariants are integers and rational angles which will be a priori given in contrast to the usual theory of secondary characteristic classes. The definition of these invariants features a duality between the reals and quaternions, moreover a quaternionic version of...

YMSC Topology Seminar | Computing the TVBW 3-manifold invariants from Tambara-Yamagami categories

Abstract:I'll give a quick intro to spherical fusion categories and the Turaev-Viro-Barrett-Westbury construction, which associates an invariant of oriented 3-dimensional manifolds to each such category. Some of the simplest spherical fusion categories are the so-called Tambara-Yamagami categories, which depend on the data of a finite abelian group A, a choice of isomorphism between A and its ...
