Title:

Internal waves and circle homeomorphisms

Abstract:

Internal waves are gravity waves that propagate within density-stratified fluids and play a fundamental role in geophysical and astrophysical fluid dynamics. The spectral and evolution theories of internal waves are related to circle homeomorphisms, sometimes referred to as "chess billiards". In this talk, I will introduce recent developments in mathematical theory of two-dimensional internal waves in domains with boundaries, highlighting the “classical-quantum correspondence” between dynamics of internal waves and circle homeomorphisms.
