Abstract:

We shall discuss basic concepts of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Attention will be paid to phase transitions and critical phenomena, which arises from the coupling of modes of different length scales. This idea of coupling different length scales also occurs in turbulence and lies at the heart of the proof by Komogorov and Arnold in their proofs.
